FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The fibre infrastructure installation will commence on the 1st of March 2022. Once the infrastructure is installed we will start doing installations into the houses.

We expect to start doing installations into the first houses at the latest May 2022. Once a line is installed into your home it shouldn’t take longer than a week to get you up and running. The time lag is essentially for the line installation and activation, but once this is done, connectivity will happen instantaneously.

2. Do I need a telephone line to use fibre optics?

The brilliant news is no. You don’t need any telephone lines to use fibre optics as the connection carries data via light across glass cables, not copper wire cables.

3. What are the differences between fibre and the current LOS - Wireless service we provide in Stilbaai?

Simply Wireless provides a LOS (Line of Site) Wireless service at the moment that is stable in normal weather conditions. This service is connected with a Wireless dish on the outside of your house that connects you to a tower, on average between 1 and 3 km from your house.

With fibre result is a much more stable and enhanced internet experience –faster speeds, almost simultaneous upload and download times, scalability, reliability and enhanced internet security. Fibre optics are not affected by weather and are not susceptible to interruptions resulting from copper wire theft.

4. Can I use my current DSL router?

Because fibre works on a completely different system to DSL, you can’t necessarily use the same router. However, it’s possible to use your existing Wi-Fi enabled router to transfer the fibre connection via Wi-Fi. This all depends on the existing router you have and how the provider installs the fibre.

5. How far does Wi-Fi extend?

A general rule of thumb in home networking says that Wi-Fi routers operating on the traditional 2.4 GHz band reach up to 150 feet (46 m) indoors and 300 feet (92 m) outdoors. Older 802.11a routers that ran on 5 GHz bands reached approximately one-third of these distances.

6. How much data do I get?

Our service is uncapped and unshaped.

7. What hardware will be installed.

We will install a fibre line into your home with a ONU (Optical Network Unit). An ONU converts optical signals to electrical signals via a fibre cable, This Unit does not extend Wi-Fi into your home. We install a Wi-Fi router to do this.

8. Trenching on the sidewalk.

We applied for a way leave to trench on the sidewalk in Stilbaai with the sole purpose of installing fibre which was given to us. The whole proses will be monitored by an external contractor that Hesequa municipality will appoint. Part of the way leave specifies that we need to reinstate the sidewalks where we trench. We normally drill underneath driveways and where we cross roads to avoid damage to the residents driveways and the tar roads of Stilbaai.

We have no intension to unnecessary disrupt the day to day operations in Stilbaai and we intent to reinstate all sidewalks the way it was before we trenched.

9. Holiday homes.

We will install fibre into holiday home but only with 12 month contract and not a swich on, swich off solution as and when they need it. If a holiday home owner want a service like that we can assist with a Point to Point solution connecting the service to one of our towers.
